Varicose veins (veins that have become enlarged and twisted) are not just a cosmetic problem. Apart from symptoms such as aching, pain, leg heaviness and leg swelling, they can also cause serious complications like venous ulcers, brown discolouration of the skin around the ankles (lipodermatosclerosis), bleeding and phlebitis (painful inflammation of the varicose veins). If left untreated, these complications are often difficult and time-consuming to rectify.
The Vein & Artery Clinics offer the newest, minimally-invasive techniques to treat various veins, including radiofrequency ablation (VNUS closure), endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), foam sclerotherapy (often in conjunction with VNUS or EVLT) and glue ablation treatment. Which means you have access to state-of-the-art vascular treatments that do not involve an invasive operation, a prolonged recovery period or a long hospital stay.
Since Vein and Artery Clinics offers impartial, expert and personalised advice, all of the treatment options will be discussed in detail with you at your consultation, and you will work together with Mr Neil Browning to consider the procedure best suited to your individual needs.
What the treatments involve
These techniques can be done under local or general anaesthetic. They involve passing a small catheter up the leaking varicose vain, under ultrasound control via a tiny skin puncture. Heat energy (radio frequency or laser) is then used to close off and thus eliminate the varicose vein. In glue ablation treatment, cyanoacrylate glue is injected through a catheter along the vein, also closing off the vein and stopping blood running in the wrong direction down the vein. These techniques spare the patient a large incision either in the groin or behind the knee, as well as reducing any post-operative bruising associated with the more traditional tie and strip procedure. Patients are mobile immediately following the procedures and generally have a much quicker and less painful recovery. Plus, avoiding large incisions ensures a much better cosmetic result.
